Which Hampton Roads localities does Norfolk Senior Advisor cover?

We cover 13 Virginia localities: the independent cities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson and Williamsburg, and James City, York, Gloucester and Isle of Wight counties -- the Virginia side of the metro area only.

Virginia's independent cities are not part of any county, so each has its own department of social services, its own local screening team for Medicaid long-term care and its own Adult Protective Services intake. That is why we organize the site by locality rather than by ZIP code: the agency that handles an Auxiliary Grant application is decided by where your parent lived before the move.

How do the Southside, Peninsula and Middle Peninsula differ for senior care?

The Southside -- Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Isle of Wight -- shares one area agency on aging and one ombudsman office. The Peninsula and Historic Triangle share another pair, and Gloucester on the Middle Peninsula is served by Bay Aging.

Southside: Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth; Western Tidewater: Suffolk, Isle of Wight County; Peninsula: Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, York County; Historic Triangle: Williamsburg, James City County; Middle Peninsula: Gloucester County. Hospital systems follow the water too: Sentara and Bon Secours dominate the Southside, Riverside the Peninsula and Middle Peninsula, with Sentara Williamsburg and Sentara CarePlex as exceptions.
